Inaugurated in 2017 and located inside the admirable São Vicente Fort, overlooking the city of Torres Vedras, this Interpretation Centre pays homage to the sacrifice of thousands of Portuguese civilians in the construction of the fortifications, but also in the pursuit of the scorched earth policy that, at an incalculable cost to the population, placed difficulties to the supplying of the French troops and made their prolonged stay in the territory unsustainable.
The CILT of Torres Vedras also seeks to enhance the central role of the Lines of Torres system in the outcome of the Peninsular War. In addition to detailed maps showing the evolution of events, a miniature replica of an English optical telegraph and a projection room where you can watch a film about the Napoleonic Wars, it displays a collection of caricatures from the time, providing a direct perspective of the historic facts. The CILT is installed in the medieval hermitage of São Vicente, which was, in 1809, integrated into the military structure of the São Vicente Fort, and is one of the six Interpretation Centres of the Lines of Torres Vedras in existence today.
