Located 63 km North of Lisbon, the municipality of Lourinhã has been enhancing its heritage related to the French Invasions, with a view to developing tourist products within the scope of Military Tourism. On the 21st of August 1808, in the context of the 1st French Invasion of Portugal, the Napoleonic and Allied armies clashed in what would become one of the most important events in the history of Portugal and Europe: the Battle of Vimeiro, which took place in the parish of the same name. This heritage is preserved and activated through the Batalha do Vimeiro Interpretation Centre and the annual event “Historical Recreation & 19th Century Market”.
Located in the heart of the Oeste region, it has enormous historical and military relevance, in particular the village of Roliça, the scene of the battle, in 1808, between the French and the Anglo-Portuguese armies. The Allied objective was to delay the arrival of Napoleonic troops in Lisbon, and this event decisively marked the fate of the 1st French Invasion of Portugal. With the aim of integrating the resulting heritage resources, the municipality of Bombarral has developed strategies for the preservation of all this important legacy, with emphasis on the Batalha da Roliça Trail, the project to create the Batalha da Roliça Museum Nucleus and the integration in the Historic Route of the Lines of Torres Vedras and in the network of municipalities that make up the Napoleonic Itineraries of Portugal.
