 WHERE TO EAT

TASCA DO BECO TORTO

Beef Wellington is the delight of anyone visiting A Tasca do Beco Torto, in Arruda dos Vinhos. The veal loin steak is wrapped in puff pastry and stuffed with sauteed spinach, a mixture of bacon and ham and the famous mushroom sauce of the house. Baked in the oven and served with mashed potatoes, it is washed down with an emulsion sauce made, among other ingredients, with vegetables, rosemary, and red wine, which makes this delicacy unique.

This dish pays homage to the British commander Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Through the palate, it takes us on a journey through the history of the French Invasions in Portugal and in particular in the territory of Arruda dos Vinhos.

For this much appreciated dish, A Tasca do Beco Torto proposes a pairing with a local classic, the red wine Lote 44 from the Adega Cooperativa de Arruda dos Vinhos. With a garnet colour and aromas of red fruits, this Lisbon Regional Wine, made from Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Aragonez, is soft and persistent on the palate, balanced, and smooth in the end.

 WHAT TO DO

QUINTA DA ALMIARA

After a peaceful awakening, head to the Quinta da Almiara, near the Lines of Torres Vedras.

Surrounded by its 160 hectares of vineyards, the farm is located in a place of splendid landscapes, in the parish of Ventosa, municipality of Torres Vedras, and is inserted in the Wine Region of Lisbon, with old wine production, a temperate climate with no accentuated thermal amplitudes, gentle hills and, due to the proximity of the ocean, intense Atlantic influence.

Quinta da Almiara, a family business, produces since 1980 high-quality red and white wines, using selected red and white grape varieties: Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Castelão, Merlot, Aragonez, Caladoc, Syrah and Fernão Pires.

Along the way, immersed in the region's vineyards, you will find, at the top, a contemporary building whose architecture intertwines with the vine stalks.

Book an ‘Almiara Adventure’ and, driven by a Westshuttle UMM jeep, tour the farm's vineyards in the company of your host, who will tell you the local history and introduce you to the different varieties grown here.

The route unites two stages, taking you to the Casal do Vale, an agricultural farm close by, where white varieties are planted and where you can take a break to scent, taste and feel the nectar produced here.

At the end of the route, a picnic in the vineyard will welcome you and provide a family moment while tasting the products of the land, washed down with a red or white wine. We promise you a memorable morning in a place where the origins of the farm and the knowledge of the people of the land are extolled. With our eyes on the Lines of Torres Vedras, we want to make this moment unique.

If you want even more comfort, contact Westshuttle and let them lead your two-day getaway to discover the heritage of the Lines of Torres Vedras territory, with itineraries full of emotion and breath-taking landscapes, in a region where history, culture, gastronomy, and wine reign supreme.

 WHAT TO VISIT

SANTO QUINTINO CHURCH

Sobral de Monte Agraço

Built in 1520 by King Manuel I and a National Monument since 1910, it is one of the most beautiful temples of Manueline and Renaissance architecture in the Lisbon region. It boasts an XVI century portico with various decorative elements of Manueline and Renaissance style and its interior is an authentic tile museum, with panels dating from the XVI to the XVIII century. Its paintings, statuary and architectural pieces are also of high value. A French saint, whose devotion was probably introduced by the Crusaders who came to help the Portuguese kings in the Christian reconquest, this is the only place where Santo Quintino, patron saint of the parish of the same name, is venerated in Portugal. Despite having received several restoration interventions, the most profound in the XX century, the church was spared the destruction and looting caused by French troops during their presence in the region, benefiting from the fact that an advanced headquarters of the Anglo-Portuguese army was installed nearby.
