‘Thou hast a box of Bucellas wine too, which hath warmed thy head’
(Shakespeare, Henry VI)
Nestled in the heart of Portugal, Bucelas boasts a rich history and a renowned reputation for its exceptional white wines. Quinta da Murta stands out as a premier vineyard in this historic region, offering a taste of the finest Bucelas wines.
Developed by the Romans and revered as the prince of dry whites, the history of Bucelas wine dates back 2000 years. For centuries, it was the only white wine in Portugal, celebrated for the longevity that made it the wine of choice during the Age of Discoveries. Bucelas wine has also been a therapy for kings and a delight for the British royal court, especially during Shakespeare’s era, as referenced in the play “Henry VI”.
Quinta da Murta produces superior quality wines in white, rosé, and red varieties, both still and sparkling. These wines undergo prolonged aging, contributing to their exceptional quality. The internationally registered trademark “Quinta da Murta – The Wine of Shakespeare” highlights the vineyard’s historical significance and superior product.
Located near the Atlantic Ocean, the unique terroir of Quinta da Murta is composed of limestone and marl. Its location provides ideal southeast sun exposure, slopes with a 15-25% gradient, and vineyards planted at altitudes between 200 and 250 meters. The result is warm days and cool nights, perfect for cultivating the Arinto grape, native to Bucelas. The vineyard’s protected area and isolated biodiversity enable near-biodynamic production methods.
At Quinta da Murta, wines are crafted using indigenous yeasts and aged on fine lees with batonnage. The wines are stabilized at low temperatures and bottled on-site, ensuring the highest quality control.
Quinta da Murta’s dry white wines are known for their exuberant and fresh aroma, with notes of lemon, apple, tropical fruit, and subtle floral hints against a mineral backdrop. The wines offer a well-balanced and creamy body with a long, persistent finish.
Beyond the vineyards and modern winery, Quinta da Murta features a reception hall for 300 guests, a tasting room, a shop, and an outdoor deck, all beautifully decorated and benefiting from breathtaking views of the valley and its limestone cliffs.
Quinta da Murta invites you to discover the exquisite wines of DOC Bucelas, where tradition meets exceptional craftsmanship in every bottle.
