 WHERE TO EAT

PATANISCA RESTAURANT

Located in the historical centre of the city of Torres Vedras, on Rua 9 de Abril (the former Estrada Real connecting Torres Vedras to Lisbon and which was urgent to defend against the invading troops), the restaurant Patanisca stands out not only for its interior decoration but also for the quality and diversity of its gastronomic offer, which surely won’t leave you indifferent.

This is a life project for young entrepreneurs who look to the future anchored in the tradition of the territory and the history of this place. They were not indifferent to the importance and potential of the Lines of Torres as a tourist product and invested in creating a gastronomic experience that refers to flavours seasoned with stories that are told at the table.

In this modern tavern you will find the ideal place for a period gastronomic experience in a warm, welcoming, and soulful environment.

 WHAT TO DO

TAPADA DE MAFRA

D. João V, the “Magnanimous King” (1689-1750), ordered the construction of the Palace-Convent in the village of Mafra, in fulfilment of the promise he made in case the Queen gave him descendants.

This grandiose monument, built at a time of great real prosperity as a result of the exploration of gold and diamonds in Brazil, constitutes a masterpiece of Portuguese Baroque.

With programs aimed at families, many activities can be enjoyed in this enchanted forest. Venture out on hikes following one of the three existing routes; rent a bike and feel the wind on your face as you travel the trails; stroll in a buggy, in a romantic environment and accompanied by the sounds of nature. If you want to know the trails of Rei D. Carlos, take a ride in an electric car and go through the corners and nooks that were marked by his presence.

Here you will find the ideal place to spend an afternoon with your loved ones!

 WHAT TO VISIT

LINES OF TORRES VEDRAS INTERPRETATION CENTRE - TORRES VEDRAS

The Lines of Torres Interpretation Centre (CILT) highlights the central role of the Torres Vedras Lines defensive system for the outcome of the Peninsular War and pays tribute to the sacrifice of thousands of Portuguese - men, women and children - who built more than one hundreds of fortifications or have been hit by the ‘scorched earth’ policy. People who, with great sacrifice, left their homes and crops behind, heading to Lisbon, in a painful exile, but essential for the Anglo-Portuguese victory.

The Lines of Torres Vedras Interpretation Centre - S. Vicente Fort consists of three exhibition nuclei: 'Communications on the Lines of Torres and timeline', 'The Lines of Torres Vedras', and 'The fall of Napoleon'.

In addition to exploring the exhibition’s nuclei, visitors can watch, in the auditorium, a documentary film tracing the historical background of the French Invasions, with emphasis on the 3rd Invasion, the exile of the population, and the defensive system north of Lisbon.

S. VICENTE FORT

Built in 1809 and considered as one of the most important and largest military works in the entire defensive system of the Lines of Torres Vedras, the Forte de S. Vicente was equipped with 26 pieces of artillery and a military contingent that ranged from 2000 to 2200 men, being able to accommodate about 4000 soldiers. It had an optical telegraph inside, which allowed a quick communication with the Forte do Grilo and with the signal station erected in Serra do Socorro, the command post closest to the Wellington Headquarters.

N. SRA. DA GRAÇA CHURCH AND CONVENT

Founded in the 16th century by hermits of the order of Saint Augustin, it currently houses the Leonel Trindade Municipal Museum. Of great interest are the main altarpiece in the church and the tomb of S. Gonçalo de Lagos, patron saint of the city. The Cloister of the Convent is lined with a magnificent set of 18th century tile panels alluding to the life of D. Frei Aleixo de Menezes, probably constituting the largest set of tiles in the history of the 17th century, featuring a unique narrative, in the country.

During the first French invasion, a field hospital was installed in the convent and the church was converted into a warehouse, under the responsibility of the British Commissioner, by order of His British Majesty.

CERCO GARDENS

Originally a conventual garden, built by António Rebelo da Fonseca by command of D. João V, the Jardim do Cerco, of baroque style, is a historic space for recreation and leisure, comprising a forest, botanical garden, formal garden and leisure areas, geometrically arranged and with flowerbeds well spread over wide streets, with approximately nine hectares. The current conception of the space was carried out by the French gardener Jean Baptiste Désiré Bonard during the 19th century, with the introduction of new exotic tree species. Water mirrors, remarkable trees, the ball game enclosure, and a century-old water wheel, still in operation, are some of the attractions of this garden. This place is the perfect transition between the vastness of Tapada and the monumentality of the Palace-Convent, which stands on one of its flanks.

 NOT TO MISS

V TORRES VEDRAS ORGAN CYCLE

Composed of great concerts, where an historical organ, built in 1773 by Bento Fontanes, is invited to dialogue with other instruments and with other artistic realities, in an authentic “crossing” of arts and fields. The concerts will be commented, providing interaction, in a ‘magical’ space, the Igreja da Misericórdia. In this edition we will have the Polish organist Norbert Itrich, of the Coro Notas d`Alta, the violinist Zófia Pajak, and a presentation by the Luís António Maldonado Rodrigues School of Music, a Torriense institution of reference in music education.
