The past revisited at Sobral de Monte Agraço

Today, the re-enactment groups of the Associação 13 de Setembro de 1913 have around 50 members, aged between 5 and 85

In 1999, the Associação de Cultura e Recreio 13 de Setembro de 1913 was born out of a long tradition linked to the Comissões de Festa (Festival Committees), which for over a century organised the Sobral de Monte Agraço festivities and summer fair. The name of the association refers to the date of the beginning of these festivities and reflects its identity, deeply rooted in the local culture.

The Guerrilha de Montagraço group was created to revive the actions of the popular guerrillas during the Peninsular War. Based on extensive historical research, the group recreates ambushes, sabotage and other acts of resistance that helped weaken the French troops.

In 2018, the association founded the Companhia de Artilharia de Sobral (Sobral Artillery Company), which is part of the Portuguese Napoleonic Association (ANP). It has received specialised training, culminating in the acquisition of a faithful replica of a historic cannon and other equipment.

The Association’s work strengthens Sobral de Monte Agraço’s link with the history of the Lines of Torres Vedras and promotes the dissemination of a crucial period in Portuguese history. The Association invites the community to participate in this project and to keep alive the memory of an era that shaped the destiny of Portugal.
