AT THE HEART OF THE LINES OF TORRES VEDRAS

At the heart of the Lines of Torres Vedras: Napoleonic Routes of Portugal and Spain is the name of the new guide published, in Portuguese and English, by the Historical Route of the Lines of Torres Vedras.

The guide introduces the visitor to the heritage of the Lines of Torres Vedras related to the defence of the territory during the French Invasions of Portugal, but also discloses other places of interest whose relevance justifies a visit. Available are also suggestions on what to do and what to taste, as well as information about the Interpretation Centres of the Lines of Torres Vedras, spread over a region that crosses six municipalities and extends over 85 km between the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean, and whose proximity to Lisbon invites people visiting the capital to enjoy the cultural and leisure experiences that the Oeste region offers.

The locations shown in the guide integrate two of the seven routes of the Napoleonic Itineraries across Portugal and Spain – the 3rd Invasion Route and the Wellington Route, duly indicated with page markers. These routes bear witness to the legacy that the Napoleonic epic left in Europe, and whose heritage, landscape and attractions we hope to have revealed in this publication.

At the Heart of the Lines of Torres Vedras: Napoleonic Routes of Portugal and Spain resulted from the work developed under the project NAPOCTEP - Itineraries through Spain and Portugal which, added to the European Cultural Route Destination Napoleon, had the intention, through the creation of Napoleonic routes along the territory of the Centro de Portugal and Leon and Castille regions, to transform the cultural legacy of the Peninsular War into a sustainable tourist offer, bringing with it cross-border cooperation.

The guide is available, free of charge, at the Interpretation Centres of the Lines of Torres Vedras at Arruda dos Vinhos, Loures (Bucelas), Mafra, Sobral de Monte Agraço, Torres Vedras and Vila Franca de Xira (Forte da Casa). For directions and schedules, please visit  RHLT's web page.
