Quinta Várzea da Pedra

'DOC Óbidos wines are produced with the aim of expressing the character of this landscape'

In the tasting room at Várzea da Pedra winery, one detail is difficult to miss: at the corners of the tables, small hand-painted tiles depict fish, flowers, popular figures and other motifs from Portuguese tradition. At first glance, they seem merely decorative. In fact, they are the inspiration behind the labels on the estate’s wines, themselves drawn from tiles that form part of the family’s history.

It is a detail that says much about the identity of this estate. Owned by the Emídio family since 1910, the property entered a new phase when the fourth generation decided to restore the winery and create a wine project of their own. Today, among the vineyards and Rocha pear orchards of Bombarral, DOC Óbidos wines are produced with the aim of expressing the character of this landscape, shaped by its proximity to the Atlantic, Óbidos Lagoon and the Serra de Montejunto. The grapes are harvested by hand, intervention in the winery is kept to a minimum, and indigenous yeasts help preserve the individual character of each wine.

Visits take in the vineyard, the winery and the history of the estate before ending in the tasting room. It is there that the little tiles catch the eye once again. Having discovered the estate, we realise they are not there simply to decorate the tables. They are a small piece of family memory transformed into a visual identity — a reminder that, sometimes, the identity of a wine begins with the most discreet of details.
